What Changed? (Quick Summary)
-
The number of required CME hours has not changed.
-
Beginning February 27, 2026, MD and DO physicians will no longer submit CME documentation directly to the Board.
-
CME compliance will instead be verified through an approved tracking organization or active specialty board certification.
These reporting updates apply only to MD and DO physician licensees and do not change CME requirements for Physician Assistants or other license types.
Beginning February 27, 2026, updates to Continuing Medical Education (CME) reporting requirements take effect for Mississippi-licensed MD and DO physicians. These updates modify how CME compliance is reported but do not change the number of CME hours required.
Physicians must continue to complete forty (40) hours of Category 1 CME during each two-year CME cycle and certify compliance during renewal in even-numbered years.
CME Reporting Requirements
MD and DO licensees must demonstrate CME compliance through one of the following methods:
-
Maintain an account with a Board-recognized CME tracking organization; or
-
Maintain active certification with a specialty board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), when applicable.
Licensees are responsible for maintaining CME documentation and providing it to the Board if requested.
Approved CME Tracking and Certification Organizations
The following organizations are recognized for CME tracking or certification verification purposes:
Participation in any one of these systems may be used to demonstrate CME compliance, as applicable to the licensee’s professional certification or tracking preference.
Controlled Substance Training Requirement
Completion of the one-time, eight-hour training on opioid or other substance use disorders required by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) satisfies the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure’s controlled substance training requirement for practitioners who maintain an active DEA registration.
No additional controlled substance training is required by the Board once this DEA training has been completed.
Licensee Responsibility
The Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure does not operate or control third-party CME tracking or certification organizations and is not responsible for the accuracy, availability, or performance of external systems or services. Licensees remain responsible for maintaining documentation and ensuring compliance with all applicable CME requirements.
