CME Requirements at Renewal

DPM licensees must complete 40 hours of Category 1 continuing medical education (CME) per two-year cycle, as required by Mississippi Administrative Code Part 2610, Chapter 2. Compliance is certified at annual renewal.

Current and upcoming CME cycles:

  • July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2026
  • July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2028
  • July 1, 2028 – June 30, 2030

Approved CME for DPMs. DPMs may satisfy the requirement using Category 1-A CME accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) for podiatrists. Other Category 1 sources approved under the rule also count, including programs sponsored by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the American Medical Association, or the Mississippi State Medical Association.

Recordkeeping. Licensees must maintain certificates of attendance, completion certificates, proof of registration, or similar documentation for each program completed, and provide records to the Board upon request.

DEA Controlled Substances Training: Licensees with an active DEA Controlled Substances Registration must complete the one-time DEA opioid and substance use disorder training required by Section 303 of the Controlled Substances Act.

Initial license exemption. Licensees receiving their initial Mississippi license after June 30 are exempt from the minimum CME requirement for that initial period. CME certification is due in the next cycle.

Waivers may be requested before April 1 of the final year of the CME cycle for legitimate cause. Approval is at the discretion of the Board.

Full CME requirements are set forth in Mississippi Administrative Code Part 2610, Chapter 2.

Late Renewal

Renewing after August 1

If a licensee needs to renew after August 1, he or she must submit a late renewal request through MELS (Mississippi Enforcement and Licensure System) with an explanation for the late renewal. Once received and approved by the Board, the licensee will be notified by email.

Late fines:

  • $25.00 base fine
  • Plus $5.00 for each month the license remains delinquent

If a licensee submits a late renewal request during the active renewal period, the licensee must renew the license for both the late renewal period and the current renewal period.

License Expired More Than One Year

Reinstatement required

If a license has been expired for more than one year, the licensee must submit an application for reinstatement rather than a renewal. A podiatrist whose license has been expired for five (5) years or more must successfully clear a fingerprint-based criminal history records check as part of the reinstatement investigation.
