The license renewal period begins annually starting May 1st and ends June 30th.

The cost to renew an MD/DO administrative license is $300.00. There is also an additional convenience fee charged.

Renewal applications are submitted via MELS (Mississippi Enforcement and Licensure System).

How to Renew

  1. Log in to MELS

Sign in at the MELS gateway using your existing username and password. Renewal applications are submitted through MELS.

  2. Certify your CME compliance (even-numbered renewal years)

Physicians certify at renewal that they have completed the required 40 hours of Category 1 CME during the current two-year cycle. Beginning February 27, 2026, CME documentation is no longer submitted directly to the Board; physicians must still maintain documentation in case of audit.

  3. Complete your renewal in MELS

Follow the prompts in MELS to complete your renewal.

  4. Submit the renewal and pay

Pay the $300.00 renewal fee plus the convenience fee through MELS.

CME Requirements at Renewal

Physicians (MD & DO) must complete 40 hours of Category 1 CME per two-year cycle. Compliance is certified at renewal in even-numbered years and applies to all license statuses, including retired.

Current and upcoming CME cycles:

  • July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2026
  • July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2028
  • July 1, 2028 – June 30, 2030

Reporting methods. Beginning February 27, 2026, CME documentation is no longer submitted directly to the Board; physicians must still maintain documentation in case of audit. Use one of two reporting methods:

  • Option 1: CME Tracking System. Maintain an account with a Board-approved CME tracking organization (CE Broker, ACCME, ABMS, or AOA). Ensure your Mississippi medical license is properly identified within the tracking system.
  • Option 2: Board Certification. Maintain active certification with a board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Lifetime certification, without ongoing maintenance of certification, does not satisfy this requirement.

DEA Controlled Substances Training: The one-time DEA-required 8-hour opioid/substance use disorder training satisfies the Board’s controlled substance training requirement for DEA-registered practitioners.

Exemptions apply only to the current CME cycle: initial licensure issued after June 30 of an even-numbered year, residency or fellowship training, or first-time board certification obtained during the cycle. Full compliance begins in the next applicable cycle.

Waivers may be requested before April 1 of the final year of the CME cycle for legitimate cause. Approval is at the discretion of the Board.

Full CME details, tracking organizations, exemptions, and waiver information: View CME Requirements.

Late Renewal

Renewing after August 1

If a licensee needs to renew after August 1, he or she must submit a late renewal request through MELS (Mississippi Enforcement and Licensure System) with an explanation for the late renewal. Once received and approved by the Board, the licensee will be notified by email.

Late fines:

  • $25.00 base fine
  • Plus $5.00 for each month the license remains delinquent

If a licensee submits a late renewal request during the active renewal period, the licensee must renew the license for both the late renewal period and the current renewal period.

License Expired More Than One Year

Reinstatement required

If a license has been expired for more than one year, the licensee must submit an application for reinstatement rather than a renewal.
