Radiologist Assistant (RA) License Application

For applicants seeking a Radiologist Assistant license. Practice is conducted under the direct supervision of a licensed radiologist.

At a glance: A Radiologist Assistant license authorizes performing radiology procedures under direct supervision of a radiologist. RAs may not interpret images, make diagnoses, or prescribe medications. Submitted online through MELS (Mississippi Enforcement and Licensure System).

Fee: $500, payable after submission. View full fee schedule.

Renewal: Annually. Renewal applications mailed by May 1; due by June 30. Renewal fee optional for those over age 70.

Qualifications for licensure

All of the following are required:

  • Graduate of a radiologist assistant education program accredited by the A.R.R.T., or graduate of an RPA school holding RA certification from ARRT.
  • Passed the radiologist assistant examination provided by the A.R.R.T.
  • Current and unencumbered registration as a radiologic technologist with the Mississippi State Department of Health.
  • Current certification in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).
  • At least twenty-one (21) years of age and of good moral character.
  • Two (2) favorable references from physicians licensed in the United States.

Scope of Practice

After demonstrating competency, the radiologist assistant, when ordered by the supervising radiologist, may:

  • Perform selected procedures under direct supervision, including static and dynamic fluoroscopic procedures.
  • Assess and evaluate the responsiveness of patients undergoing radiologic procedures.
  • Evaluate image quality, make initial image observations, and communicate to the supervising radiologist.
  • Administer intravenous contrast media or other prescribed medications.

The radiologist assistant may not interpret images, make diagnoses, or prescribe medications or therapies.

Supervision Requirements

Direct Supervision means the radiologist must be present in the office suite and immediately available throughout the performance of all procedures. The radiologist does not need to be in the room.

CA.R.R.T. Education and ExaminationVerification of graduation from an accredited radiologist assistant program and passage of the A.R.R.T. radiologist assistant examination.
DMississippi Department of Health RegistrationCurrent and unencumbered radiologic technologist registration.
EACLS CertificationCurrent certification in advanced cardiac life support.
FTwo Physician ReferencesTwo favorable references from physicians licensed in the United States.
GCertificate of InsuranceForwarded directly to the Board by the physician’s and/or RA’s insurance carrier prior to supervising practice.

Identification and Practice Requirements

  • Identification: RAs must wear a name tag identifying themselves as radiologist assistants when on duty. They may not advertise as independent practitioners.
  • Change of address: Any change of practice location must be reported to the Board in writing within 30 days.

Continuing Education

Biennially complete at least twenty-four (24) hours of radiological-related continuing education approved by:

  • Mississippi Society of Radiologic Technologists
  • Mississippi Radiological Society
  • Mississippi Medical Association or Mississippi Osteopathic Medical Association
  • AMA, AOA, American Society of Radiologic Technologists, A.R.R.T.
  • American College of Radiology or American Osteopathic College of Radiology

How to Apply

  1. Verify qualifications

    Confirm A.R.R.T. graduation and exam, MS Department of Health registration, ACLS certification, age 21+, and physician references.

  2. Register in MELS

    Create a username and password in MELS.

  3. Complete and submit the online application

    Upload application materials and pay the application fee.

  4. Have your insurance carrier send the Certificate of Insurance to the Board

    Required prior to supervising radiologist beginning supervision.
