Volunteer License Renewal

Volunteer licenses are renewed annually upon approval of the Board through MELS (Mississippi Enforcement and Licensure System).

Fee: No renewal fee per Mississippi Law (§73-25-18). View full fee schedule.

Renewal period: Annual, upon approval of the Board.

Requirement: Continued commitment to donating expertise without compensation for medical care of indigent and needy persons or persons in medically underserved areas of Mississippi.

How to Renew

  1. Log in to MELS

    Sign in at the MELS gateway using your existing username and password.

  2. Confirm continued eligibility

    Confirm you remain retired from active practice, on active military duty, or working with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

  3. Confirm continued service commitment

    Confirm continued commitment to providing medical services without compensation to indigent and needy persons or persons in medically underserved areas of Mississippi.

  4. Submit the renewal

    No renewal fee is charged. Renewal is subject to Board approval.

Eligibility for Volunteer Renewal

Per Mississippi Law (§73-25-18), the special volunteer medical license is for physicians or physician assistants who are:

  • Retired from active practice; or
  • Currently serving on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States or in the National Guard or a reserve component of the Armed Forces; or
  • Working as physicians or physician assistants for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Licensees must continue to donate expertise for medical care and treatment of indigent and needy persons or persons in medically underserved areas of the state.
