Physician Assistant CME Requirements

At a glance: Every PA licensed in Mississippi must complete 100 hours of CME every two years to keep their license active. 50 of those hours must be Category 1. If you are authorized to prescribe controlled substances, 5 of your 100 hours must focus on prescribing.

CME Requirements for Physician Assistants

Per 30 Miss. Admin. Code Part 2615, Rule 1.9:

  1. 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years.
  2. 50 of those 100 hours must be Category 1, as defined by:
    1. Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)
    2. American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA)
    3. American Medical Association (AMA)
    4. American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
  3. If you are authorized to prescribe controlled substances, 5 of the 100 hours must be related to prescribing medications, with an emphasis on controlled substances.

CME Reporting Cycle

The CME renewal cycle is every two years.

CME cycles:

  1. July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2026
  2. July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2028
  3. July 1, 2028 – June 30, 2030

Documenting Your CME

There are two ways to satisfy the CME requirement.

Option 1: Current NCCPA Certification

If you hold a current certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), your active certification serves as evidence that you have met the 100-hour CME requirement, per Part 2615 Rule 1.9.

Option 2: Self-Maintained CME Records

If you are not currently NCCPA-certified, you are responsible for keeping up with your own CME hours. Maintain certificates of completion and supporting documentation for every CME activity, and have them organized and accessible in case you are audited for CME compliance.

Rules and Regulations
